December in Review

At the beginning of this month we hosted a Safety Social in our leasing office. Officer Harmes from the Overland Park Police Department came by to talk to us about a few safety tips for this winter, holiday shopping and to answer all of our questions. We had a great turn out with some great questions too!

We also had our annual holiday party at our leasing office the following week and had an even better turn out! The chocolate fountain was a huge hit and so was the wine tasting for the adults! Santa even made an appearance with a trunk of goodies.

Our Adopt-A-Family donation was an AMAZING success! Thank you to all of you who donated! We are going to have one very happy and lucky family this holiday season.

Thank you to all of our wonderful residents in making this year the best year yet! Have a happy and safe new year!

Happy Halloween! Pumpkin Carving Tips

It's pumpkin season! Here are a few carving tips:

Tools you will need include: Knife/carving set, scoop, neewspaper, pumpkins, design, trashcan

1. select your pumpkin from a local pumpkin patch
2. Very carefully cut out a circle on the bottom of the pumpkin
3. clean out seeds and strings with a scoop and put in trash ( or save seeds for baked pumpkin seeds- YUM!) scrape inner pulp away from wall
4. Draw your design and carefully cut along the lines, try cutting at a 90 deg angle to the pattern.

Prevent your pumpkin from drying out by placing petroleum jelly on the cut edges of your carving.
Spray your pumpkin with water, cover it with plastic wrap then store it in the refrigerator when it's not on display. This helps prevent premature decomposition.
Soak or spray the pumpkin with water mixed with a little bit of bleach. This will help ward off mold and kill insects for a longer preservation.

Good luck and have fun!

Labor Day

"...the nation pays tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom and leadership--the american worker."

We celebrate Labor Day every year by just taking a free three day weekend, but why don't we take a moment to think about what Labor Day is really about.  The first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday September 5th 1882 and was observed to celebrate the social and economic achievements of american workers. Take a moment to thank your doctors, your local cashiers, your co workers and most importantly yourself! Get the kids involved by asking them what they want to be when they grow up and making a fun activity out of it.
So, take a break and relax, you work hard! Let us know what you do to relax every Labor Day!

Stress Relief

You may not think of the summer time as being a stressful time of the year but we constantly have things in our life that will build up stress. It can even take a toll on our health and wellbeing. So many things cause unwanted stress- anything from moving, to cleaning, to roommates, and decorating. It is very important to do small things every day to relieve your stress.

Some stress relievers include: exercise, laugh!! talk to someone, sleep, listen to music, eat healthier, take a few minutes a day to organize your life, do something nice for someone else, take a bubble bath, do something creative, limit your cell phone and internet use, and start your day positive.

Doing at least one of these every day will help with stress immensely! Do you know any helpful ways to relieve stress? Let us know!

Remember to JUST BREATHE! It could always be worse!

Here at The Preserve we are getting very excited for the Summer Olympics! Did you know that there are only a number of sports that have stuck with the Summer Olympics since the very beggining? They are athletics, swimming, fencing, and gymnastics!

    Tornado Saftey

Tornadoes may strike quickly with little to no warning. Make sure you are prepared before one hits. Always have a weather radio (battery operated) on hand and listen to all instructions. Look for danger signs in a storm: dark, greenish sky, large hail, large dark low-lying clouds, loud, freight train roar. If you see any of these signs, take shelter immediately. Head to a small interior room or hallway on the lowest floor possible. Make sure you have on sturdy shoes and bring a disaster kit. Your disaster kit should include things like: nonperishable foods, bottles of water, blankets, pillows, flashlights, first aid kit, extra batteris, and of course your weather radio. If you happen to be in your car, make sure you make it to a low flat location and never under an overpass.

Final My Dearest Kitty .. In Honor of Christopher J Brooks

    FINAL My Dearest Kitty,
( Last Post from the author – Christopher J Brooks)

    · Thanks for barfing next to the food dish and cleaning it up afterwards. I love self maintenance pets.
    · Again the thing attached to your butt… it is called your tail. It is NOT attacking you.
    · Oh, and I decide to pet you… biting me is not required.
    · Please keep in mind that trying to lift the toilet seat just means your head will get stuck… AGAIN!
    · Also, please do not vocalize your ‘efforts’in the litter box! It only has a single purpose and I do not need a memo.
    · And STOP opening and slamming the cabinet doors, the food is in a dish on the floor!
    · I must remind you that cold paws on me while sleeping will get a smack to the back of your head or butt!
    · Oh and I know the heat went out again…they will be up soon to fix. Please see space heater as I am not your personal ‘heat source’… stop standing on me!
    · Also… stop sniffing the other cats butt! You know it stinks because you keep making that same face.
    · Rumor has it that an average of 50 toys are under my bed… I am not your personal entertainer. Please seek out ‘said toys’…
    · Again… Cat Conference of when you complain is at 10:15AM SHARP!  If you are late and remember your current complaint?  Just remember you got 2 cans of food for breakfast!

Christopher passed away last month on March 25th after a very brief stay in the hospital.  Friends and family were aware that he wasn’t feeling 100% but had no idea that he was in danger for his life.  He drove himself to the hospital on March 14th and would be in Hospice the following week.  Christopher was one of the winners of the IPod contest and really enjoyed that you liked his Cat Diary’s.  Now, the family is trying to find amazing homes for his adorable and obviously spoiled kitty kids.  These last few kitty thought were lines he sent to me (his Mom) after the contest was over.  Enjoy and smile often when you think of a silly kitty story.

    Hugs to you all,
    Joanne B in building 3

Fire prevention tips for your home!

    Use Surge Protectors
This not only protects your appliances, it can also help prevent a fire. If something shorts out, the spark could potentially start a fire. Also, check your electrical cords for any fraying and cracking. Replace the cord if necessary.

    Caution in the Kitchen
Move papers, bills and other flammable materials away from your kitchen stove. Kitchen fires can get out of hand in a hurry once they get started. Also, be careful when cooking anything with hot oils or grease. This is one of the most common causes of kitchen fires. Make sure you have a working fire extinguisher in your kitchen.

    Candles and Incense
Unattended candles and incense burners are frequent fire starters in apartments. Never leave theses items unattended if you are burning them.

    Don't Store Flammable Materials
If you have an extra gasoline can or a propane tank for a BBQ, don't store those in your apartment. This is a potential fire hazard, and it might even be a violation of your lease agreement.

    Cigarettes
Unattended cigarettes are the number one cause of apartment fires. This makes it a tremendous health risk not only for yourself, but also for your neighbors if you set the building on fire.

I LOVE THIS TIME OF YEAR!  We didn’t have much of a winter and now the flowers are blooming, the trees are turning green and the landscaping is becoming beautiful once again.  It’s definitely Spring time!  And what an amazing Spring event we had!!!  We had almost 300 people attend our Annual Eggstravaganza.  That is a record from years past.  We had almost 1200 eggs to hide and with so many people having an amazing time, we are so excited for our next resident event.  A huge thank you to all of our sponsors, Time Warner Cable and Sarpino’s sponsored the 40 pizzas that we had and Design Source Flooring, HD Supply, Action Glass, and Signature Landscaping donated all of the gift cards that many of our residents took home that day.  It was a good day!

Have you noticed our new online payment system?  You no longer have to go in and change the amount every month to include your water bill.  The system is set up to automatically withdraw the right amount.  How incredible is that?  If you haven’t already signed up or need more information, please do not hesitate to contact my office and we will be happy to help get you set up.

And B-I-N-G-O was his name… Oh!  DID YOU KNOW that we are giving away $50 a month just for playing BINGO.  If you need a card, please let us know.  We change the cards every month so make sure to get a new one.  The numbers are posted on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/thepreserveop and on our community website http://www.thepreserveop.com/.

If you are not a FAN on Facebook – YOU SHOULD BE!  We use this as a tool to make special announcements and give away some free stuff.  AND it’s a lot of FUN too!

Have you met the new members of my staff?  Israel is the new Service Director who comes to us with many years of experience and knowledge.  We are working together for “Life Made Simple”.  Darcie is a new leasing consultant in the office.  Paul is a new groundskeeper/make ready tech and Joshua is a new groundskeeper/painter.  If you see them on the property, please say Hello.

And last but not least, THE POOL.  We are working diligently to get the pool open early but do not have an exact date as of yet.  So stay tuned and we will let you know on Facebook as soon as we have a date.
If you ever have any issues, or if I can be of assistance to you, please do not hesitate to call me.  Or since you are already on your computer reading this blog, you email me at preserve@fogelman-properties.com.

Thanks for coming home with us!
